Thesis statement 3 pts Does the summary clearly state the thesis of the article?	Poor The thesis is not stated or it is copied from the article directly.	Fair The thesis is stated, but with a not completely, or it may be misunderstood.	Good The thesis statement is clearly stated and paraphrased well.
Main ideas 3 pts Does it include all of the main ideas?	Poor The summary is missing half or more of the most important ideas are missing.	Fair The summary includes all of the main ideas except for one. They are not copied from the passage.	Good The summary includes all of the main ideas, and good paraphrasing strategies were used in stating them.
Vocabulary and GrammarChanges 3 pts Are main ideas and details stated using different vocabulary and grammar than the article?	Poor Vocabulary items and grammar are mostly kept the same as those in the article.	Fair The summary changes proper names or key terms along with vocabulary items that are appropriate. Grammatical structures are changed but not accurate.	Good The summary appropriately paraphrases material from the passage.
